Course Description: This course is a compilation of concepts and applications of backflow, drainage, product selection, and central control as related to the health, safety, and welfare of the public.  This is not an infomercial for any specific product, but rather design considerations and ramifications of the topics.  In addition, this workshop has a hour segment on "Barrier Free Design". What makes this segment notably different is it is presented from the view of a handicapped person.  This brings into play different problems and solutions to a barrier free design.

Course Description: This workshop will be viewed from the perspective of a handicapped person. It will look at issues that may not be taken in consideration when designing a barrier-free design, but will have a major impact on the person who the design was intended for. This section can be taken independently from the rest of the LA  workshop. This section will provide 1 hour  CEU credit.

Course Description: This course is a compilation of concepts and applications of the relationships of design concepts to water conservation along with state and local ordinances. Hydraulics, irrigation scheduling, water budgets along with MPR are addressed. This is not an infomercial for any specific product, but rather design considerations and ramifications of the topics.  In addition, this workshop has a hour segment on "Barrier Free Design". Course Title:  Basic Irrigation Systems and Design (BISD)

Course Description: The course is a six (6) day course that is approved for 48+ hours in duration.  It is scheduled for three (3) days with a week break in between, then the remaining three (3) days.  This is done so that you can still take care of work, family, and have some semblance of a life. The  workshop comes with the Basic Irrigation Systems Design manual, scheduling software, bidding and estimating software, ET Charts for the state, and worksheets on disk format that will assist you in the design process. Our workshop is taught by the author of the training manual, who also owns 3 copyrighted design techniques approved by the TCEQ, has over 21 books on irrigation published, and has a proven track record in design and training. Homework is provided with the completion of class.  The completed designs will be critiqued by a WMS instructor .  The results are sent to the student along with  suggestions and an additional design.  This process will be done up to your exam date.  This is not a new program for us, we have been doing it for the past three years. Our workshop is taught by an instructor who has worked in the irrigation industry as a contractor and as a designer.  The design processes which you will utilize in this workshop was developed by the senior instructor. The class includes  three "realistic" designs in the class room plus the state required exit design.

Course Title:  Comprehensive Irrigation Systems and Design  (CISD)

CEU Hours:     N/A                                   CEU for Whom:  Although this course is not directed nor intended to be used for the irrigation licensure program or CEU program, it is in the process of application to the TCEQ for 40 hours of CEU credit. This class is directed to the experienced irrigators or architects who want to catch up with the most current information available to the irrigators.

Course Description:  This course is a four day (4) comprehensive irrigation design course that takes the student from the initial site analysis of an irrigation site through the bidding and estimation process, and ultimately to the installation process.  It includes the following chapters:  Site assessment, Compliance with ADA, Determining the water source, Drafting techniques, Understand and using a specifications manual, Understanding and using Matched Precipitation Rates, Understanding design concepts, Product selection based on site conditions, Irrigation design, Advanced irrigation design concepts, Zoning an irrigation design, Fundamentals of zoning, Fundamentals of hydraulics, Advanced hydraulics, Understanding backflow, Drought management, ET based scheduling, Central Control, Installation of irrigation systems,  Bidding and estimating, and Irrigation Troubleshooting and repair.

Course Title:    Design Revisited - An Irrigation exam review workshop

Course Description:  This course is a comprehensive review of the design process. This workshop includes an interpretation of  basic site analysis, topographical data, determining the water meter capacities, backflow issues, and then selection the appropriate heads to operate within the calculated water pressures. This information will  be translated into a functional irrigation design utilizing spray, rotor and drip applications. The use of matched precipitation will be used. The design portion will include both conventional and drip design work.

Course Description: This workshop is prepared for licensed irrigation professionals whom are conducting the principles and practices of irrigation design. The 8-hour workshop will be a solid refresher on the building blocks of irrigation design and in addition will enhance other design process. The following topics will be discussed and determined: maximum safe flow rate of a water meter, maximum safe flow rates without a water meter, maximum flow rates of loop mains, optimized watering windows, component selection based on performance requirements vs. performance available, cost vs. quality, cost vs. quantity, client expectations vs. product loyalty, determining when to use a rotor vs. a spray, selecting a head based on site conditions and determining the spacing and style for a landscape application.

Course Description:  This workshop is prepared for licensed irrigation professional designing irrigation systems at the residential, commercial and institutional levels. This workshop will explore the reason of why we irrigate, and the cause and effect these reasons have on an irrigation design. Although this workshop will review the basic fundamentals of design, this eight hour workshop will expand the design skills possessed as a licensed irrigator. This workshop will provide the irrigator the skills necessary to increase the performance and efficiency of design. It will show them how to make an analytical decisions on product selections and not rely on marketing or personal input to affect a more efficient design.

Course Description:  This workshop is prepared for licensed irrigation professional designing irrigation systems at the residential, commercial and institutional levels. This workshop will address all of the key issues that are required in the proposed TCEQ rule changes.  This workshop is a two day workshop that will take the irrigator from the initial site visit all the way through the generation of the "hydraulic statement" and ET based irrigation schedule.  The irrigator will complete the comprehensive design that is provided by the TCEQ for training purposes of a "typical design".  This design will utilize rotors, sprays, and drip irrigation.  The project includes shrubbery and turf.  In addition, the property has a 16.7 foot elevation change and is the property has clay soils.  This workshop will show the irrigator how to  determine the most optimum spacing, select the most correct products, maintain complete compliance with all TCEQ design standards, and design turf with drip irrigation.  In addition, the workshop will show the irrigation designer the most optimum process for zoning for both high and low water pressure and GPM scenarios.

Course Description: This workshop is targeted to the professional irrigator who is working with or working for a commercial landscape or grounds maintenance group, a property management group, or is interested in designing systems to drought conditions.  This workshop addresses the issues facing the irrigator and the irrigation systems as droughts and water conservation becomes more prevalent.  This workshop will address issues that can be done to existing systems to prepare for drought conditions and the problems associated with a drought.  In addition, issues and parameters that an irrigation designer should incorporate into an irrigation plan during the design and construction phases of the irrigation process will be discussed.

The workshop will take an in-depth look at the many facts that should be taken into consideration when planning, designing and installing a Central Control irrigation system. This workshop will discuss a variety of issues that will have either a direct or indirect impact on the central control system that is selected.

Course Description: The  workshop is targeted to assist all levels of irrigators in the scientific and yet practical approach to designing an irrigation system to its optimized levels. This process takes the manufacturer’s product application and optimizes them with the requirements for efficiency as established by the TCEQ. The end result is that the irrigator will have a highly water efficient irrigation system that is in complete code compliance. This will directly impact the end user via water conservation and reduced operating costs.

Course Description: This workshop is targeted for the irrigation professionals utilizing drip irrigation in their landscape design and construction. This workshop will focus on the practical applications for drip irrigation as well as how to design and use drip irrigation in both the commercial and residential setting. It will provide you with the generally accepted formulas for determining the irrigation schedule that is now required by some cities and local ordinances. The following topics will be discussed: definitions, terms, properties, application, filtration, regulation, compensation and design.

Course Description:    This workshop is targeted towards the irrigator who is bidding at the residential and light commercial level.  It will teach the irrigator how to determine what items should be included in a bid, what the cost of goods sold is, how to determine over-head with burden and without burden.  It will show the contractor how to determine what is truly profit and what are expenses.  More importantly it will show the irrigator how to correctly and successfully bid an irrigation project for profit in a fast and easy format without resorting to such methods as bidding by the zone or by the head.

Course Description:    This workshop is targeted to those professional irrigation designers who are in the arena of irrigation design and installation.  This workshop is a comprehensive review of Matched Precipitation Rate (MPR) in both spray and rotor applications.  This workshop will focus on the direct correlation of design and product performance as it relates to the correct specifications and application of the product.  The “Cause and Effect” of pressure, volume, distance, precipitation rate and Distribution Uniformity (D.U.) will be addressed.  Viable solutions will be offered to the designers.  Although many different brands and manufacturers will be discussed in this workshop,  Water Management Specialists nor the TCEQ endorses or recommends any particular irrigation product.

Course Description:    This workshop is targeted to those professional irrigation designers who are involved in the design and operations of irrigation systems. This workshop utilizes computer  software to calculate and analyze many aspects of the irrigation design and operational process. The workshop will offer both "Theory" and an "Application" approach to head spacing for sprays,  rotors, and drip. Zoning, hydraulic calculations and ET based irrigation scheduling are discussed and utilized. In addition, it will provide a calculator for many industry utilized formulas such as area,       volume, diameter, circumference, foot of head, PSI  etc.

Course Description:    This workshop targets professional irrigation designers who are actively involved in the design and operations of irrigation systems. This workshop is a continuation of the "Computer Software for the Professional Irrigator" class. The irrigation student will be provided a plot plan of a commercial project in which they will utilize the software and the skills they have learned.  The class focuses on a commercial design used to explore the benefits and utilization of the powerful tools of the software in combination with AutoCAD LT™.

Course Description: This workshop is targeted towards the irrigator who is involved from the installation aspect of the irrigation system.  This workshop will start at the reading of the “Blue-Print” and will end at the programming of the controller.  The workshop will discuss many of the interactions between the irrigator and others, such as pulling of the permits, having the backflow certified, determining and meeting the local codes, and the final inspections with the client, code officials, or owners agent.  This workshop will address a wide range of techniques from correct valve sizing and installation to thrust blocking and establishing an initial and long-term irrigation schedule.

Course Description:   This workshop is targeted to the professional irrigator who is responsible for establishing and maintaining an irrigation schedule.  This workshop focuses on how to generate a water and cost efficient schedule utilizing Evapotranspiration (Et) in either an existing or proposed system.  It addresses water conservation issues and the impact on the scheduling of an inefficient design.  The workshop will teach the student how to identify the systems efficiencies and to establish an irrigation schedule for a specific system site.

Course Description:     This workshop is targeted to the irrigation professional that is in the field and is diagnosing or troubleshooting and repairing residential and commercial irrigation systems.  This comprehensive workshop focuses on Cause and Effect.  It addresses many techniques in identifying problems and the solutions for the problem.  The workshop addresses electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic problems.  Each student will gain hands-on knowledge working on a complete “Mock-up” of an electrical problematic irrigation system.  They will utilize a multi-meter to diagnose and troubleshoot the electrical side of the irrigation system from the controller as well as diagnose a wide array of electrical problems.  (If you will need to purchase one call the WMS office prior to purchasing one so we can help select a recommended multi-meter.)

Course Description:   This workshop is targeted to the irrigation industry.  It concentrates on the actual sales presentation to the client.  It provides the contractor with a format to sell the features and benefits of their design at a higher price and profit margin.  This workshop will help the contractor educate the client without giving away the farm.  This workshop will utilize proven sales techniques, role-playing, proven marketing strategies and proven forms and formats.  It will provide the contractor with the tools necessary to provide their client with a cost justification and comfort zone of purchasing the project at a higher price.  It will help the contractor raise their professional image. 

  

The following green industry** classes are not approved for CEU credits for LI or LA's at this time. Therefore, there is no TCEQ approval code or credit hours listed.

Course Title:  General Horticultural & Grounds Maintenance (1day class)

Course Description: This workshop targets residential and commercial grounds maintenance professionals.  It addresses the horticultural correct methods to prune and trim landscape shrubbery.  It will discuss the many mowing methods and will discuss the “pros and cons” of each.  Pest control from an organic and chemical point of view will be discussed.  The workshop will discuss issues such as time and motion, personnel scheduling, equipment scheduling, codes, preventative maintenance, EPA, OSHA, MSDS sheets, and safety.  This workshop is an excellent primer for anyone who is involved in the grounds maintenance industry. 

 

General Topic: Green Industry **

Course Title:  Hands On Irrigation Installation Techniques (1 day class)

Course Description:  This workshop is designed for those individuals in need of a practical “Hands – On” approach to the installation process of an irrigation system. This workshop will assume nothing, and will start at the beginning and build a foundation from this point. The how and why will be explained. As the name implies, the student will be actively involved with the components. The student will physically tap into a mock up water meter and make the cross connection tap. You will work with PVC, copper, and poly tubing. You will be cutting pipe, wiring valves, working with a multi-meter, and hold all the parts and pieces you have been talking about. This workshop will include tapping the water source, components, parts and pieces, sweating copper, solvent welding, swing joints, valve installation and configuration, backflow, electrical wiring, wiring in a rain switch, wiring in a controller, head installation and pipe installation.

Course Title:  Landscape Drainage (1 day class)

Course Description: This workshop addresses landscape drainage.  The student will be taught how to do a site assessment and determine if the drainage problem is a surface, sub-surface, or both.  It will discuss the “cause and effect” of drainage problems.  The workshop will discuss many of the methods that are in use in the market place.  The student will learn how to calculate the water flow and design the most optimum method of water removal after the type and cause and effect has been determined. 

 

 General Topic: Green Industry**

Course Title:  Landscape Design 1 (3 days of class)

Course Description: This three (3) day comprehensive landscape design workshop is targeted to the landscape professionals who have not had any formalized training in landscape design or those that wish to expand on their skills.  The workshop will take the student from concept to site assessment, client interviews, soil analysis, layout, plant selection, design, design presentation, and installation techniques. This workshop will utilize a complete manual, slides, overheads, handouts, and hands-on design.  The student will be actively involved in the design process.  Each student will be required to complete a design based on the skills taught in the workshop.  This class is limited to a maximum of fifteen students so as to allow for maximum student to instructor interaction. 

 

General Topic: Green Industry **

Course Title:  Service Contracting in the  “Green Industry” (2 days of class)

Course Description: This two (2) day workshop is targeted to the “Green Industry” contractor who is new to or is actively engaged in the “Contracting” phase of the “GREEN INDUSTRY”.  This workshop will have multiple tracks of professionals speaking in their field of endeavors.  This will range from Insurance agents, CPA’s, Attorneys, Safety, and Code officials. The workshop will include bidding, ethics, sales, and marketing as they relate to the “Green Industry” contractor.  This workshop will focus on residential and commercial applications.  This workshop is designed to provide solid answers and address major issues on the fundamentals of a “Green Industry” business contractor.  It will help the contractor to become a better contractor and provide him or her with value added skills as well as information to enable them to design, bid, install, sell, and maintain their product at a higher level.
